I have taken to taxi driving as a second source of income. It was a stretch to accept the fact I was now one of those guys waiting at Haslemere station at all hours, putting up with boredom, traffic, harsh competition and rude and /or drunk passengers. It is a far far cry from my ‘proper’ job as a self-employed Persian and Modern rug broker, finding, making and placing rugs in some of the country’s finest homes!
I was lucky enough to happen upon the taxi drivers of Silverline Taxis of Haslemere who are a co-operative, sharing a phone number and website with no boss and no payments being demanded from an owner. The set up really is the best of all worlds. We are self-employed, buy and insure our own cars and can loosely log in and out of our phone system at will. Richard set up Silverline in 2017 and the company is rapidly growing and attracting customers – both business and personal. We have an interesting life servicing the events at Cowdray Polo and House, as well as Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival, Goodwood Horse Racing and the many wedding venues surrounding the Haslemere area. It has been a real pleasure to drive people to the two main airports of Gatwick and Heathrow – some fascinating conversations have taken place and some strong bonds put in place. The hours can be brutal, the roads can be like parking lots and the passengers can sometimes be forgettable but it is a job that offers a different day every day- and with the long hours come the good pay days!
